Taking a route through Gaudí’s buildings in Barcelona is inevitable. Just step out for a walk in the Catalan capital to find yourself immersed in his work. On Passeig de Gràcia, you’ll find Casa Milà and Casa Batlló (very close to each other).

The free tour of Gaudí, Sagrada Familia, and modernism is the best way to start discovering modernist architecture in Barcelona.

Gaudí and Catalan Modernism

Gaudí’s work reached its peak during the modernism movement, partly because, from the mid-19th century, the resurgence of Catalan culture began to adopt Gothic forms as a style unique to Catalonia.

This style aimed to combine nationalism and cosmopolitanism to present itself to the rest of Europe as an optimistic region with faith in progress, particularly among the bourgeoisie.

Gaudí drew much inspiration from nature and organic forms. In fact, the rock formations of the Montserrat massif served as the foundation for many of the structures Gaudí implemented in his architectural creations.

The Best Gaudí Buildings in Barcelona

It is difficult to determine which are the best buildings of Gaudí in Barcelona, considering the genius present in each of them. There are up to 15 works of the architect that you will find in the Catalan capital, from iconic works like the Sagrada Familia to those that might go unnoticed, such as the lampposts in Plaça Reial or the Fountain of Hercules in the Palau de Pedralbes.

The Gaudí works we mention below are those that stand out for their architectural innovation, their significance among Barcelona’s monuments, and for having been declared World Heritage by UNESCO.

You will discover why they are among the best places to visit in Barcelona.

The Sagrada Familia

Sagrada Familia Barcelona

Undoubtedly, this is Gaudí’s most famous work, the main symbol of Barcelona worldwide and one of the most visited places in all of Europe. Whether you enter the temple or admire it from the outside, the Sagrada Familia will leave you speechless. Its construction began more than a hundred years ago and there is still work to be done.

During your visit to the Sagrada Familia with a tower ascent, you can climb to the highest point allowed to visit in this monument and enjoy the best views of Barcelona from above. Inside, you’ll see the imposing columns that shape a forest illuminated by perfect stained glass windows, the Gaudí museum, and millions of meticulously planned details that escape the logic of the senses.

Casa Batlló

Casa Batllo

Casa Batlló is a must-stop on our route through the most important buildings of Gaudí in Barcelona. It is an architectural work of art that seems to breathe and have a life of its own, with balconies that evoke dragon scales and bones. The legend of Sant Jordi, the patron saint of Catalonia, and the dragon was a clear inspiration for Gaudí for the facade of Casa Batlló.

You can see Casa Batlló, the Cathedral of Barcelona, Montjuïc, and much more on this tour of Barcelona’s highlights.

Parc Güell

Parc Guell Barcelona

Parc Güell is the most famous park in Barcelona and an unrepeatable work that reflects Gaudí’s naturalistic period. It was built by Gaudí at the request of Eusebi Güell between 1900 and 1914, originally intended as a housing development.

For the good fortune of the Barcelonians and those visiting, the project evolved and ended up becoming an iconic place, full of nooks, paths, and structures that transport you to a world full of imagination and also offer some of the best views of Barcelona and the Mediterranean.

Discover curiosities, anecdotes, and unknown details of the history of this famous work by Gaudí on a guided tour of Parc Güell.

Casa Milá

Casa Mila

Not far from Casa Batlló is Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera, another of Gaudí’s most prominent works in Barcelona. It is an imposing modernist construction that leaves no passerby indifferent and caused much controversy at its inception.

From the street, it looks like a single building, but it is actually two six-story buildings with two inner courtyards. Its construction dates back to 1906 when the Eixample area of Barcelona began to be occupied by the Catalan bourgeoisie.

Address: Passeig de Gràcia, 92, Barcelona (Metro L3 and L5 station Diagonal)

Casa Vicens

Casa Vicens Barcelona

Located in the cozy Gracia neighborhood, Casa Vicens was one of the first projects commissioned to Gaudí right after he graduated as an architect.

In 1883, Manuel Vicens i Montaner entrusted a young Gaudí with the construction of his summer home, where you can recognize the early influences of his work, with styles clearly influenced by Eastern designs such as Mudejar, Persian, and Byzantine.

Address: C/de les Carolines, 20-26, Barcelona (Metro L3 Fontana)

Hours: Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00.

Beyond Gaudí’s marked influence, Barcelona is a city where tradition and modernity coexist, pointing to the future. There are also many excursions near Barcelona that will surprise you.

We recommend checking out a visit to Montserrat, whose basilica houses the Virgin of Montserrat, patron saint of Catalonia. You will also find that there is much to see in Girona, a beautiful city famous for its medieval old town, which was also the setting for the series Game of Thrones.
