Among the fishing villages along the Algarve coast, Albufeira is the top choice, offering stunning views of magnificent beaches. This is a popular European destination, known not only for its scenic views but also for its lively nightlife.

While we definitely recommend visiting, if you’re looking for a more peaceful getaway, you might consider Lagos, also located in Algarve. Both destinations have a port ideal for sports activities and equally beautiful beaches, but Lagos tends to be less crowded.

That said, if you’re up for adventure and your family is along for the trip, this list is packed with one-day experiences and the most essential things to do in Albufeira.

Albufeira Beaches, amongst the best places to visit in Algarve

Playas Albufeira

One of the top attractions of the coastal town of Albufeira in Portugal—and not to be missed—are the spectacular beaches of the Algarve. Surrounded by red and orange cliffs, they promise stunning photos for all who visit.

What better plan for a tourist than to relax on the sand during the day and dine by the sea as the sun sets? Keep in mind that as the largest tourist city in the Algarve, the beaches can get crowded during summer months. Still, it’s possible to find quieter spots by exploring the area by car or by boat. A guided activity like the Ponta da Piedade Boat tour is a great way to explore Algarve's hidden gems.

The most central beach is Praia dos Pescadores, followed by Peneco, both accessible from the city center. The best beaches in Albufeira, although further away, are: Praia da Coelha, Praia de São Rafael, Praia da Falésia (the longest in Albufeira), Praia dos Arrifes, Praia do Castelo, and Praia de Santa Eulália.

With a full-day safari in Albufeira, you can also explore the rural towns of this coastal region.

Paderne and its Castle

Considered one of the “7 Wonders of Portuguese Villages,” Paderne is a small town in Albufeira, perfect for dedicating a few hours to during your trip.

Here you’ll find one of the castles represented on Portugal’s Coat of Arms: Castelo de Paderne, which attracts numerous visitors every year. Built in the 12th century, this structure, now in ruins, is notable for its construction technique with thick walls made of “taipa,” a type of concrete made from compressed chalk, limestone, gravel, and soil.

A half-day safari from Albufeira will take you to this and other nearby villages.

Another gem in Paderne is the Côrte-Real Gallery, specializing in contemporary fine arts, sculptures, and prints, along with the Accordion Museum, displaying over 1,500 pieces of significant cultural value.

Water Sports in Albufeira

Dream Wave Jet Boat 2

Active travelers often choose this destination for the variety of activities available on its beaches: paddleboarding, kayaking, parasailing, scuba diving, and surfing are just some of the experiences on offer.

Our favorites are jet ski excursions, providing a unique and fun way to enjoy the stunning colors of this part of Portugal’s coast.

Dolphin Watching

Avistamiento Delfines Algarve

Another adventure not to be missed—and one suitable for travelers of all ages—is dolphin watching in the Algarve. The climatic and sea conditions make this area an ideal spot for observing these creatures, with the best season running from mid-July to early September.

Embark on a memorable family excursion with our jet-powered boat tour in the Algarve, where, in addition to spotting these friendly animals in their natural habitat, you’ll also visit the famous Benagil Cave, described by many travelers as the most fascinating spot in the Algarve.

You can also take the Benagil cave tour on a rigid Inflatable boat. This scenic journey offers a peaceful way to discover hidden gems, secluded beaches of the Algarve and (although not guaranteed), some dolphin watching.

Cave Tours and Pirate Ship Cruises

Paseo Pirata Algarve 1

After dolphin watching, another family-friendly activity in Albufeira is taking a boat trip to explore the majestic caves and cliffs in the area. Besides Benagil, you can also visit the Xorino, Elephant, Zorreira, and Comb caves.

If you’re traveling with children, we recommend a pirate ship cruise along the Algarve coast. This sailing tour not only lets you explore the coastline’s hidden gems, but it also includes a treasure chest full of costumes on board, which the little ones will love.

Historic Center of Albufeira

Albufeira Casco Antiguo

Breathe in the essence of this old fishing village and learn about its monuments by wandering through the charming cobblestone streets of the historic center.

The heart of Albufeira is the square in the old town. Around this lovely public space, you’ll find entertainment spots, shops, and restaurants where you can enjoy the fresh, exquisite cuisine of Portugal’s coast.

This area is also home to the Samora Barros Art Gallery, a delightful building that hosts exhibitions of fine arts, sculpture, ceramics, and photography, along with poetry readings and small concerts. The Algarve coastal region offers an abundance of experiences.
