Travel Guide to Marrakech: Day 1

We will begin our tour of Marrakech by the most bustling areas and where the day to day life of the city takes place.

The Medina

Marrakech Medina

The Medina has been declared a World Heritage Site, is an old city, where we find palaces, mosques and mazes of narrow streets.

It is interesting to stroll through the Medina early in the morning, when everything is closed and the streets are almost deserted, when you can take a good look at the details, the facades of the reddish-colored houses and their wooden doors with golden handles.

Here are the riads, traditional houses that have been transformed into residences for tourists and are charming.

Visit the souks

Marrakech Zoco

Take the opportunity to stroll through the souks and see the labyrinth of narrow streets full of stores. Although at first glance can be a little intimidating, stroll through its labyrinthine streets and even dare to bargain is a fascinating experience.

It is located north of the Jemaa el Fna square, in its streets you find small bazaars, there are dresses, spices, furs, slippers, carpets, wool, wood, crockery, etc.. and of course, you also find the workshops of artisans, dyers, carpenters, blacksmiths, etc..

Tanneries

Curtideria Marrakesh

Take some time to visit the neighborhood where the tanneries are located, where they work and tan the skins. There are several basins filled with pigeon droppings that are used to clean and soften the skins so that they can be worked.

Some men dunk themselves in tanks up to their waists. With both hands, they dip the skins into the opaque liquid, spread them over the edge and repeat the operation. You can finish the visit by visiting the stores in case you are interested in buying some fur.

At the entrance they give you mint so that you can smell it and disguise the smell of the place.

The Medersa

Madraza Ben Yousef

The Medersa, or Madrasa Ben Yousef, is a school of higher studies for students seeking knowledge in different sciences, including theology.

It had 132 rooms for students from outside Marrakech and could accommodate 900 students. Opposite the entrance door, on the other side of the rectangular basin, is the prayer room. The rooms were very austere in contrast to its magnificent courtyard full of luxuries.
