Itinerary
Cádiz is known for its historical charm as one of the oldest cities in the western world, with magnificent beaches and an important cultural legacy. Thus, Cadiz has been a melting pot of cultures throughout history, which is reflected in its architecture, its gastronomy and its festivals, such as the carnival.
We will meet at the scheduled time in the Plaza de San Juan de Dios to begin this exciting guided tour. The first thing we will see is the City Hall of Cadiz, a beautiful building built in the seventeenth century whose neoclassical facade attracts the attention of everyone who passes by. It is said that paranormal experiences have occurred there.
A few minutes later we will pass by the Casa del Almirante, a surprising baroque palace-house built in 1685 by Don Diego de Barrios, admiral of the fleet of the Indies, and which today is being converted into a hotel.
Our next stop will be at the parish church of Santa Cruz, better known as the Old Cathedral of Cadiz and one of only two temples of its kind in the city. Did you know that, according to legend, this church was built on the site of an ancient Muslim mosque?
We will also enter the narrow streets of the Pópulo neighborhood, considered the oldest in Europe. Delimited by three 13th century arches, it is the best kept jewel of the city along with the Cathedral of Cadiz, which is also called the New Cathedral (for obvious reasons).
We will tell you when it was built and some curiosities such as why the crypt of the cathedral has such a high degree of humidity and who are buried here.
The tour will continue through the colorful Plaza de las Flores, so called because of the colorful flower stalls that occupy the central area, and the Plaza de Mina, with a surprising historical and artistic value. This square, built where the orchard of the convent of San Francisco used to be, is surrounded by majestic houses built between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Then, we will walk a few blocks until we reach the Plaza de España, built on land reclaimed from the sea and one of the most emblematic of the city. We will end the tour in front of the Monument to the Constitution of 1812, but not before talking a bit about its history and giving you some suggestions about other places worth visiting in Cadiz.
