Itinerary
We’ll begin by meeting your guide at Sint-Michielsplein (St. Michael's Bridge), from where we’ll set off toward Graslei quay, a historic waterfront promenade along the Lys River, known for concealing several secrets beneath its surface.
Next, we’ll head to one of Ghent’s hidden gems: Appelbrugparkje, a quiet park by the river where, in ancient times, condemned prisoners spent their final moments before facing execution. Here, you’ll also find Hoofdbrug, the "Bridge of Beheadings," and enjoy panoramic views of the imposing Gravensteen Castle.
From there, we’ll make our way to the remains of the former Prinsenhof Palace, the birthplace of Charles V, one of the most influential figures in European history and, during the 16th century, the most powerful man in the world.
You’ll hear the fascinating story of his birth and learn about the violent measures he took to crush any rebellion against him.
Continuing on, we’ll visit the Augustijnen Monastery, where Philip II of Spain and the notorious Duke of Alba once imposed strict religious repression to prevent the spread of Protestantism across the Netherlands.
Finally, we’ll wrap up the tour in Patershol, one of Ghent’s most charming medieval districts, which also happens to be rich with legends and eerie tales.
After two hours of exploring the city’s history and its darker side, you’ll walk away with new insights into Ghent’s fascinating past. Plus, you’ll have the chance to meet fellow travelers and share your thoughts on the stories you've just heard.
