Itinerary

The free tour of Alfama will take you through 3,000 years of Lisbon's history in a fun and entertaining way. Once the tour is over, you will have a global vision of the identity of one of the most authentic neighborhoods of Lisbon and you will have discovered hidden corners that do not appear in the guide books.

Alfama is not only one of Lisbon's oldest and most picturesque sites, but it was also one of the only places that wasn't destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. And so, the city still maintained its familiar charm. In fact, this neighborhood’s nickname comes from the Arabic ‘Al-hamma’ which means ‘hot springs’ or ‘baths’.

Our tour starts in Rossio and passes through some key areas of Alfama, such as:

  • Dona Maria II Theatre
  • Sao Domingos Church
  • Figueira Square
  • Sao Jorge Castle
  • Portas do Sol viewpoint
  • Sé Cathedral

Decorated with beautiful tiles, this neighborhood's steep, winding alleys give way to stunning views over a sea of terracotta roofs and the Tagus River. The aromas of traditional Portuguese cuisine, the echoes of fado and the conversation of elderly Portuguese people make this neighborhood one of the most authentic in Lisbon!

We will continue walking along traditional azulejo covered houses (tiles) and steep streets to one of the best viewpoints in Lisbon: Portas do Sol, where you can see a panoramic view of the red roofs of Alfama with the river Tagus as a backdrop.

The tour culminates in the vicinity of the Sé de Lisboa Cathedral, where your guide will share his knowledge and make suggestions about which other places to visit in Alfama, as well as the best places to listen to fado.
