Itinerary
You'll be surprised to know that the city of Vila Nova de Gaia is the second largest in Portugal in terms of population, and even more so when you see with your own eyes its level of development. On this 2-hour free tour you will learn a lot of the city's history's past and present and admire its most emblematic sites.
After meeting your guide at the Oporto Cathedral, right at the statue of Vímara Peres, we will cross the iconic Dom Luis I Bridge, which links the city with Porto. Have your camera ready as you're about to witness the beauty of the bridge and the breathtaking views it offers.
Once on the other side we'll be on Avenida da República, and in no time we'll be passing the Serra do Pilar Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and then the Jardim do Morro, where the visual delight will also be present.
We will continue on foot along Avenida de Diogo Leite, where we will stop at such emblematic sites as the Portuguese House of Pastel de Bacalhau, the Beira Rio Market and the Cais de Gaià, an extensive area full of restaurants, terraces, gardens and entertainment venues.
Did you know that the development of this historic place is due, to a large extent, to the famous Port Wine? This is quite an interesting story, and of course the guide will tell you all about it.
We'll also take a close look at the Corpus Christi Convent; the Half Rabbit, a large sculpture by the renowned Portuguese artist Bordallo II that is made from waste and recycled materials; and the Parish Church of Santa Marinha, which dates back to the 16th century.
We've saved the best for last, and to round off this experience we'll pass through the impressive WOW Porto complex (The World of Wine). Opened in August 2020, it was born from the restoration of several old Port wine cellars and houses a total of seven museums, twelve restaurants/bars, shops, a wine school, exhibition spaces and a chocolate factory.
