Our adventure begins after the sun sets in Praça de Gomes Teixeira, in front of the historic University of Porto – a landmark with over a century of history and the largest university in Portugal. Just across, marvel at the stunning Igreja do Carmo, famous for its Baroque architecture and intricate tilework. Together with the neighboring Igreja das Carmelitas, they're known as the charming Twin Churches.
A short stroll will lead us to Café Piolho, an iconic establishment deeply connected to the city's university life. Its intriguing name, meaning "louse," has sparked numerous theories about its origin.
Next, we'll immerse ourselves in Porto's vibrant nightlife on Rua Galerias de Paris, the city's most lively street after dark. Here, a diverse range of bars, restaurants, and clubs awaits, and we'll uncover the history and importance of this buzzing area for locals.
We'll then continue to the iconic and historic Bolhão Market before reaching the breathtaking Capela das Almas (Chapel of Souls), one of the most photographed churches in Portugal. From there, we'll descend Rua Santa Catarina, Porto's main commercial and historical artery, where we'll admire key buildings like the Gran Hotel do Porto, Café Majestic, Igreja de Santo Ildefonso, and the São João National Theatre.
Our tour will also take us down the enchanting Rua Chã, offering incredible illuminated views of the Porto Cathedral and a glimpse into the city's Roman past through the remains of its ancient Primitive Wall.
Finally, we'll head to the emblematic Palácio da Bolsa and conclude our free tour with breathtaking nighttime views of the Douro River and Vila Nova de Gaia from Ribeira, a traditional hub for Porto's nightlife.
