Itinerary
We begin this fascinating free tour of Rome next to the impressive Castel Sant’Angelo, where your guide will explain its transformation from imperial mausoleum to papal fortress, along with the legend of the “Passetto” that connects it to the Vatican.
Did you know that over 10,000 tons of gunpowder were stored here in the 16th century, and you can still peek into its ancient dungeons today?
From there, we head to the lively Campo de’ Fiori, a Renaissance market and historic site for public events. Every morning, the scent of spices and flowers fills the air. Among other curiosities, your guide will share how Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake here in 1600, turning the square into a symbol of freedom of thought.
Just a few minutes away is the elegant Piazza Navona, built over the stands of the ancient Stadium of Domitian. You’ll admire three baroque fountains by Bernini and Borromini, and hear stories about how the square was flooded in the 17th century to host festive regattas.
We continue to the Pantheon, the temple of all gods, where a nearly 9-meter-wide oculus lets in light and rain without wetting the floor thanks to a hidden drainage system. Did you know this temple has been in continuous use for nearly 2,000 years?
Crossing the square, we reach the Temple of Hadrian, whose columns still support the medieval façade of the Chamber of Commerce. Your guide will take you back to 145 AD to imagine its original grandeur, when it housed offerings to the emperor.
Turning the corner, Piazza Colonna welcomes us with the towering Column of Marcus Aurelius, a “story in stone” featuring over 2,500 carved figures depicting his campaigns against the Germanic tribes. Each marble block weighs nearly 40 tons, and Marcus Aurelius once presided over public ceremonies here.
Crossing the elegant Galleria Alberto Sordi, you’ll enjoy its iron and glass ceiling and luxury shops framed by historic cafés. Then, the baroque magic of the Trevi Fountain will captivate you with its tritons, sea horses, and sculpted masks. Did you know that over €3,000 in coins are collected here each night to support local soup kitchens?
To wrap up, we climb to the Altare della Patria, the “Altar of the Fatherland” built in honor of Victor Emmanuel II. From its wide terraces, you’ll enjoy a unique panoramic view of Rome—an ideal spot to end the tour.
