Itinerary
We meet early at Yoyogi Park and head out together toward our first stop.
Kamakura — Giant Buddhas and Warrior Gods
We arrive in Kamakura, the ancient capital of samurai Japan, nestled between mountains and the sea. Our first stop is Kōtoku-in, home to one of Japan's most iconic landmarks: the Great Buddha, a colossal bronze statue nearly 12 meters tall dating back to the 13th century. Temple admission is included in your tour. Few people know that it was originally sheltered inside a massive wooden temple, until a tsunami destroyed it in 1498, leaving the Buddha gazing at the open sky ever since.
From there we head to Tsurugaoka Hachimangū, Kamakura's most important shrine, dedicated to Hachiman, the Shinto god of war and protector of the samurai. Its majestic red staircase and lotus gardens are quintessential Japan. Fun fact: a thousand-year-old ginkgo tree that once stood at its entrance was toppled by a storm in 2010… but sprouted new growth from its roots and is still alive today.
Enoshima — Island of Gods and the Sea
Just 30 minutes from Kamakura, the small island of Enoshima hides a remarkable blend of spirituality, nature, and breathtaking views. You'll have around 3 hours of free time to explore at your own pace, grab a bite, and discover the island's hidden corners (meals are not included, but there are plenty of options for every taste throughout the island).
To comfortably climb the steep central hill, you'll ride the famous Enoshima Escalator, an outdoor escalator system that covers 46 meters of elevation in just a few minutes, and the ticket is included in your tour. At the top, the Enoshima Sea Candle awaits: a 60-meter lighthouse observation tower where, on clear days, you can see the silhouette of Mount Fuji rising above the horizon with the Pacific Ocean at your feet. Admission is also included.
Along the way, you can visit Enoshima Jinja, a shrine complex divided into three sections dedicated to the goddesses of the sea. Its two main precincts, Hetsumiya and Nakatsunomiya, take you through gardens, sculpted dragons, and the sound of the waves. Enoshima is said to be a place of love — couples come to hang padlocks on its torii gates to seal their bond.
Yokohama — Japan's Most Glamorous Port
As the afternoon sets in, we arrive in Yokohama, the city that opened Japan to the Western world in 1859 and is today one of the country's most cosmopolitan cities. We stroll along Osanbashi, the grand international pier, an architectural masterpiece that juts into the bay like the bow of a ship, offering stunning views of the Minato Mirai skyline and the Bay Bridge.
To close the day in style, we board the Yokohama Sea Bass, a tourist ferry that cruises Yokohama Bay, with port views at sunset that are hard to forget. The ferry ticket is included. (The name, by the way, comes from "Sea Bus"… pronounced with a Japanese accent.)
After the bay cruise, we head back to Tokyo, arriving at approximately 7:00 PM.
