Itinerary

This free walking tour of Belém will take you to the center of the Portuguese Age of Discoveries as you walk through some of the most famous landmarks of Belém’s district in Lisbon with an English guide.

In the first part of the tour we will meet in the heart of Belém and start walking through this charming area on the banks of the Tagus to learn about the interesting history of the Age of Discoveries, and how Portugal became a major world power in the 15th and 16th centuries. Much of this historical legacy can be admired in this free tour of Belém.

We will start the tour at the Afonso de Albuquerque Gardens, a central park in Belém in tribute to the former viceroy of Portuguese India and the driving force behind the creation of the Portuguese Empire. Then we will learn about one of the greatest symbols of the place: the pastéis de Belém, the delicious cream cakes famous worldwide and whose recipe remains a secret.

We will continue our tour to the breathtaking Jerónimos Monastery. This monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded in 1501 in honor of Vasco da Gama's epic return from India. The impressive work is one of the main examples of Manueline style architecture.

As we make our way to the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), you will learn about the contributions to the world of navigation of the Portuguese conquerors until we reach the Rose of the Winds, a gigantic mosaic 50 meters in diameter that pays homage to seafarers and colonizers. Tip: once the tour is over, you can climb to the top of the monument for the best views of Belém.

Finally, we will continue to the Belém Tower, an ancient defensive fortress that served as a port of departure for Portuguese expeditions to the Far East. From there we will be able to admire the perspective of the iconic 25th of April Bridge and the striking waters of the Tagus.

In addition to all of the above, you will learn the stories of emblematic places such as:

  • Belém National Palace
  • The Marquis of Pombal and the Távoras Massacre
  • Gardens and Empire Square
  • Belém Tower Gardens

Once the tour is over, your guide will be able to give you tips and advice to continue enjoying Belém and Lisbon.
