Itinerary

It’s impossible to understand the essence of Lisbon without first knowing what Fado means. The Fado Free Tour in Lisbon is the only tour of its kind that will immerse you in the soul of Lisbon and the feeling of a musical expression that gives meaning to the word saudade.

Way more than a simple tour through the streets of Mouraria and Alfama, this free tour is led by a Fado singer, who in addition to sharing the exciting stories and legends about it, will give a Fado performance with the narrow streets of Lisbon as the backdrop.

After meeting your guide at Martim Moniz Square, the gateway to the Mouraria neighborhood, we will begin a tour in which you will learn to feel and understand Fado, a musical expression that arose organically among Portuguese sailors who wept and mourned for homesickness. Perhaps something you didn't know is that the word fado comes from the Latin "Fatum", which means destiny.

You will learn about the Moorish, maritime and Brazilian influences that gave birth to the current fado, its different genres and the history of the one who is considered the first fado performer: Maria Severa.

Once in the Alfama neighborhood, you will discover how a musical genre that was classified as "marginal and poor" was further categorized as a National Song, and led to the stardom of one of its greatest representatives: Amália Rodrigues, considered the "Queen of Fado". You will also learn about the effect it had on Portuguese politics, the meaning of its lyrics and the representatives of the new generations of Fado.

The tour ends near the Fado Museum and before you say goodbye, your guide can give you tips on where to go to hear the best Fado in Lisbon. Without a doubt, the Fado Free Tour is one of the most original and interesting tours you can do in Lisbon.
