This tour takes you through the agricultural region of Ribatejo to the Fátima Sanctuary, one of Europe’s most important Christian pilgrimage sites and one of the most popular destinations from Lisbon.
Once in Fátima, we’ll stop by the Chapel of the Apparitions. This is the exact place where the Virgin Mary appeared to the 3 little children is marked with a marble Column and Her image – Our Lady of Fátima. Take a look inside the Basilica of Nossa Senhora do Rosário where you may find the tombs of all 3 children: Francisco, Jacinta, and Lúcia.
Then you’ll get to discover the 14th century Batalha Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site since the 1980s. Built by the initiative of D. João I of Portugal, in the sequence of a promise he made to Our Lady of Victory, should She choose to favor the Portuguese in the battle of Aljubarrota (1385) against the army of Castilla.
Next, you’ll head to Nazaré, famous for its towering cliffs and massive waves, created by a unique underwater canyon. The town is also known for its connection to the Fátima apparition.
While here, you can enjoy a delicious lunch and taste traditional seafood dishes from this fishing village (lunch not included on the tour). On the way, we’ll also pass through the charming villages of Foz do Arelho and São Martinho.
Finally, you’ll visit Óbidos, one of the best well-preserved medieval villages in Portugal. You will end the Óbidos visit with the traditional Ginja (cherry) liqueur in a chocolate cup before heading back to Lisbon.
